From epidemiological observations and practical experience during the years 1964-1966, it is concluded that European foul brood should remain a notifiable disease. However, on scientific and economic grounds the destruction of colonies, except poor ones, is not justified, and only affected colonies need to be subject to control of movement. The best measures for control are thought to be good management with stimulative feeding (to increase activity) in dearth periods and when the flow has finished. In severely affected colonies, the artificial swarming technique could be used, or the infected comb removed and the hive renewed. In lightly affected colonies, it is only necessary to remove the comb. Drug therapy is justified only in particularly severe cases.Author.
