The purpose of this casebook is to present basic information designed to be helpful to the clinician responsible for the interpretation of umbilical cord blood gases. The series of umbilical cord blood gases was drawn from actual patients and is designed to present information in a sequential format to allow progress from "beginner" to "expert." Like every endeavor, regular practice produces faster results. In many situations, more than one interpretation is both possible and reasonable, and it is likely that feedback from the reader will result in the author becoming more knowledgeable in the process.
