The number of patients being nursed in ward areas with tracheostomies is increasing. Nurses have a professional responsibility to ensure that they can respond to this need and are able to provide competent, evidence-based care for these individuals (NMC, 2002). The importance of the role of the nurse in this area of care has also been recently highlighted by Department of Health documents, which address the needs of critically ill patients outside traditional locations.
