In India "bidi" is commonly smoked by people of lower socio-economic status; cigar and pipe are rarely used. A definite correlation between nicotine stomatitis and smoking was found. Leukoplakia is most often seen in persons with nictonie stomatitis. There is an increase in the frequency of leukoplakia and nicotine stomatitis with increase in the frequency and duration of smoking. Among non-current smokers these lesions are less frequent than among current smokers. "Chilum" smokers developed more lesions than smokers of "bidi", cigarette or "hukkah". Most nicotine stomatitis occurred on the hard palate; most leukoplakia occurred on commissures, lips and cheeks. Nicotine stomatitis is more frequent than leukoplakia.
