Prevention of induced ventricular fibrillation in dogs anesthetized with ultrashort acting barbiturates and halothane

Ventricular fibrillation was induced in 7 of 15 halothane-anaesthetized dogs by the i/v injection of epinephrine or norepinephrine. When anaesthesia was induced with thiopental sodium, thiamylalsodium, or methohexital sodium before administration of halothane, 31 of 32 dogs treated with epinephrine or norepinephrine developed ventricular fibrillation. However, treatment of barbiturate/halothane anaesthetized dogs with acepromazine maleate, chlorpromazine hydrochloride or propranolol (dl) before administration of the catecholamines protected 24 of 25 dogs against ventricular fibrillation.
