Male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing initially 42 g were given a diet low in Cu, 0.5 mg/kg, for 48 days, low in Zn, 2 mg/kg, for 28 days or low in Fe, 4 mg/kg, for 21 days; controls were given the diet with Cu 4, Zn 20 and Fe 50 mg/kg to appetite or were pair-fed on the diet with Cu 8, Zn 70 and Fe 150 mg/kg. At the end of the feeding period everted sacs were prepared from the jejunum and absorption was estimated with 64Cu, 65Zn and 59Fe. The absorption of each element was significantly increased when that element was deficient in the diet; transfer to the serosal medium also was significantly increased. Zn uptake and transfer were not affected by Cu deprivation. After Zn depletion Cu absorption was significantly greater than in controls; there were also less Cu and Zn in the liver of deprived rats. Zn deprivation had no effect on Fe absorption. In rats deprived of Fe there was no change in Zn uptake or transfer. Cu transfer was not affected by Fe depletion but Fe uptake and transfer were significantly reduced in Cu depletion.
