A report of pigeon pox in Sudan

There was a mortality rate of 35% during the first recorded outbreak of pox in pigeons in Sudan. In two other outbreaks mortality was slight or nil. Both cutaneous and diphtheritic forms were encountered. The virus was identified through laboratory transmission of the disease in embryonating eggs, pigeons and fowls together with the demonstration of intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies in infected cells from experimental as well as natural cases.
