Isolation of bacteria and viruses from aborted bovine fetuses

From 1968 to 1970, 81 aborted bovine foetuses were obtained from midwest Japan. Serum samples were collected from 69 of the aborting dams. Thirty-two foetuses (40%) were bacteriologically positive-12 for E. coli alone, 4 for E. coli plus Streptococcus, 4 for Streptococcus alone, 3 for E. coli or plus Corynebacterium, one for Vibrio foetus, and the remainder for miscellaneous bacteria or Candida isolated either alone or in combination with E. coli or Streptococcus or both. Six foetuses yielded viruses-one PI-3 virus, one bovine parvovirus and four non-cytopathic strains of bovine viral diarrhoea (BVD) virus. All 69 dams were serologically positive for bovine parvovirus, 81% for BVD virus and 72.5% for PI-3 virus.
