Total serum complement level was measured in congenic resistant strains of mice differing only at the H-2 gene complex. Significant differences in complement level between strains with different H-2 haplotypes were found in mice of both sexes. The role of the H-2 gene complex in the control of complement level was further confirmed in backcross and F2 mice from crosses between congenic lines with high and low complement level. The complement level of these animals correlated significantly with their H-2 genotype. The H-2-associated complement gene is distinct from the previously described Hc or MuB1 gene controlling C5. Studies with the strains carrying recombinant H-2 haplotypes demonstrated that the genetic factor responsible for the H-2-associated differences in complement level is located in the Ss-Slp region of the H-2 gene complex, or in its close vicinity. However, other genes of the H-2 gene complex, most likely those involved in the control of androgen-dependent traits, also may influence the serum complement level.
