Information on deaths from cirrhosis in 38 countries from 1956 to 1965 was collected for men over 15 years old. Deaths and total alcohol and wine alcohol consumption were highly significantly positively correlated. Deaths and beer and spirits consumption showed non-significant correlations. Wine predominated in the total variance in deaths irrespective of the way in which forms of alcoholic beverage were combined. Deaths did not correlate significantly with the state of nutrition or total food intake.
