Increased respiration rate and rectal temp. and sweating were seen in horses 2-24 h after ingestion of mouldy hay. Oedema developed in the limbs of some animals, extending up to the hocks and knees and causing difficulty in walking and tenderness to touch. Intravenous administration of antihistamines and corticosteroids and withdrawal of the hay led to recovery in 24 h. The hay was found to be contaminated with Aspergillus, Candida and Rhizopus spp., and when fed to 2 ponies the symptoms found in the horses were reproduced.
