In hospital at Kampala, Uganda, samples of liver and spleen were taken post mortem from 775 unselected persons 1 day to 82 years old. They were 282 Baganda, 146 Rwanda-Urundi and the rest from 10 different tribes; 540 were male. There were 96 children up to 15 years old. Of the total there were 185 with stainable Fe in liver; of the 579 over 15 years old there were 173 with stainable Fe. The 185 were classed in the 5 grades of Edington and Gilles (Pathology in the tropics; London, UK, Arnold, 1969). Incidence of stainable Fe in liver was close to that of Edington for south Ghana (West African Medical Journal (1954) 3, 66) but less than has been reported for South African Bantu. There was much Fe in persons with pancreatic malabsorption and in the undernourished but there seemed not to be an association with kwashiorkor.
