Soil samples from each courthouse area of each of the 77 counties of Oklahoma were cultured on Staib's medium. Of the 538 samples examined, 148 yielded isolates of Cryptococcus, of which 4 were C. neoformans. These were from 4 widely separated counties with diverse climates and vegetation. All 4 C. neoformans isolates were of Evans' serotype A [RMVM 1, 1364].
