Studies on 85 Large White pigs showed the small intestine grows rapidly in early life but has reached its mature length by 51/2 months. The large intestine grew much more slowly and may continue to grow for several years. The changes in the ratio of the small/large intestine length with age were statistically significant. The terminal ileum was always the heaviest part of the small intestine per unit of length and the lower ileum heavier than the jejunum.
