This report serves to highlight that significant absorption of lignocaine occurs through the urethral mucosa and that subsequent therapeutic levels of lignocaine are maintained for a prolonged period. We suggest that where a lubricant is required for urethral catheterisation under general anaesthesia an alternative to a lignocaine-containing jelly be sought. Furthermore, we urge pharmaceutical companies to make a urethral gel containing a more appropriate lower concentration of lignocaine - 1% lignocaine gel - available in South Africa.
