Semen quality and sexual behavior in boars following arsanilic acid poisoning

Sixteen boars were given food containing 2000 ppm arsanilic acid (650-700 ppm As). Seven died within 6 days. Eight of the 9 survivors were ill for between 2 and 9 days. In five cases it was possible to resume semen collection 6-8 days after the symptoms of poisoning had passed off, but one boar took 27 and another 49 days to recover reproductive function, while one never resumed reproductive activity. The quality of fresh semen was only slightly impaired, but semen collected soon after poisoning rapidly deteriorated upon storage for 48 hours. Normal storage life of semen was restored 40-70 days after recovery.
