Heat exposure and the fatty acid composition of the plasma of the young lamb

In lambs exposed to high environmental temperature (30 deg C) the increases which are known to occur in the concentrations of linoleic acid in the cholesteryl ester and phospholipid fractions of the plasma during the first seven days after birth were significantly lower than those which occurred in lambs maintained at 22 deg C. As a result of dietary supplementation with linoleic acid these differences were considerably reduced. In the phospholipid fraction the changes in the concentration of linoleic acid brought about either through dietary manipulation or environmental temperature change appeared to be associated with two separate mechanisms. When the concentration of linoleic acid was altered by dietary means there appeared to be a simple replacement of linoleic acid for oleic acid. However, the effect of the environmental temperature upon the concentration of linoleic acid in the phospholipid fraction was also accompanied by changes in the distribution of palmitic and stearic acids between the major phospholipid fractions.
