Acute myelogenous leukemias are an heterogenous group of diseases where there is excessive proliferation of abnormal myeloid progenitor cells that if untreated leads to early death due to infections, bleeding and bone marrow failure. Although universally fatal in the past, advances in the recognition of molecular markers and cytogenetic abnormalities in the neoplastic clone has led to more effective chemotherapy treatments and targeted therapy with improvement in response and survival. Recognition of these diseases, proper stratification and management in addition to better supportive care have improved the prognosis for these patients.
