The Faculty should become aware and monitor closely the signs of fatigue and sleep deprivation in the Residents. They should be able to communicate and monitor that the Residents have understood the concepts. The main goal of the message delivered by the Faculty should be that stress and fatigue is not a sign of weakness. Residents should be educated regarding the benefits of prophylactic naps, which might improve their performance. Faculty should allow space, with an open door policy for the Residents to ventilate their concerns and to listen for the sign of despair and or resignation. The Faculty should consider all the possible factors, physically, emotional and personal, that the Residents might be going through including the effect of the financial stressors that Residents on the residency. Faculty and programs should advise the residents to avoid the use of alcohol after sleep deprivation. It is also important that the Program creates strategies not only to help the Resident to deal with stressors but for the need of backups during times of a Resident's impairment.
