The purpose of this study was to examine the prevalence of DM in a sample of Hispanic patients with chronic HCV infection evaluated at the San Juan VA Medical Center and to correlate the presence of DM with age and BMI. 735 records from the HCV registry were reviewed. Most of the patients were male with an overall mean age of 54. 32% of the patients had DM. The proportion of diabetes was higher in the obese/morbidly obese as compared to lean/overweight patients (p<0.05). The presence of DM also increased after age 50(p<0.01). The prevalence of DM in our HCV patients also differed from that of the general population (P<0.01). In general, the prevalence of DM in the evaluated HCV patients is three times more frequent than the reported for the general population in PR and appears to increase after age 50 and with BMI aboye 30 kg/m2.
