The incidence of NEC has increased over the past 25 years but survival rates have increased as well. The incidence is believed to have risen due to technological and medical advancements that have allowed a greater number of premature infants to survive. The improved physiologic care of the critically ill, the institution of a standard management protocol, earlier diagnosis and treatment, and improved antibiotics all account for the greater survival rates of necrotizing enterocolitis patients.
