The purpose of this study was to: 1) review the literature related to anthropometric, metabolic, cardiorespiratory, and neuromuscular variables associated with a successful performance in long distance running events, 2) as illustrative data, describe the body composition, somatotype, cardiorespiratory, metabolic, and neuromuscular characteristics of Puerto Rican long distance runners (female n=3 and mate n=3) to make comparisons with their peers reported in the literature. The subjects were gold medal winners at collegiate, national, and international championships in distances ranging from 1500 m to 42 km. The results were within the range observed for international elite caliber long distance runners, except for the flexibility of the low back and posterior thigh, and strength/endurance of the arms and shoulder girdle musculature (push ups 1 per min). In these two variables remarkable low values were observed.
