Significant elevation in serum phosphate levels is not specific of intestinal ischemia, also occurring in the experimental situation of bacterial peritonitis and of limb ischemia. In addition, to this, by the time the increase in serum phosphate becomes significant in intestinal ischemia, irreversible vascular changes and bowel gangrene are already present. These results argue against the use of this laboratory test asa specific parameter in the early diagnosis of intestinal ischemia.
