The ten year experience of permanent pacemaker placement at the Veterans Administration Hospital was assessed. A retrospective review of the medical records of all the patients with permanent pacemakers was performed. In 77 of such patients the indication for insertion was documented objectively and the post-pacemaker follow up could be properly evaluated. There was an increase in the incidence of bifascicular block and sick sinus syndrome as indication for permanent pacemaker insertion in our population. The low perioperative morbidity in permanent pacemaker implantation together with the longer survival of the pulse generator and a better post operative follow up has expanded the clinical indications for permanent pacemaker insertion.
