Se ha demostrado que el sector poblacional comprendido por personas de 65 años o más ha crecido rápidamente debido a que se ha mejorado la longevidad. Esto ha traído como consecuencia el que se dirijan esfuerzos de investigación hacia los problemas de esta población.
