Gastroesophageal reflux is a common pediatric problem associated with considerable morbidity. The most frequent and severe manifestations are recurrent pulmonary disease and failure to thrive. Several diagnostic modalities are in current use for its early detection, the esophageal pH studies being the most sensitive. Physical and mechanical measures are the cornerstone of therapy. Surgery must be considered in those cases with severe complications.
