Hairy cell leukemia is a rare form of leukemia characterized by the presence of bone marrow and reticuloendothelial tissue of mononuclear cells in the peripheral blood. The nature of these cells is unclear and controversy exists as to whether they are lymphocytic or monocytic in origin. Two cases of hairy cell leukemia were studied with immunofluorescent antibody against Ig lymphocyte stimulation and erythrocyte rosette formation. In 2 patients evidence of a .beta.-lymphocyte origin was found.
