Let's face it. There is something intrinsically unexciting about calling yourself a health purchaser. 'David, the director of quality and customer relations' somehow fails to convey the same sense of glamour as 'Charlie, the charge nurse'. Perhaps this is one reason why nursing is badly represented in health purchasing organisations. Despite the protestations of ministers and nursing leaders that nurses have a vital role to play in commissioning health care and shaping future provision, there are only 157 of them employed in the 110-or-so English health purchasing organisations.
