Mycoplasma pulmonis as the primary cause of chronic respiratory disease in rats

The clinical signs and lesions of chronic respiratory disease were produced in germfree rats by exposing them to rats with natural disease, or to aerosols of either a cell free filtrate from affected tissues or broth cultures of Mp. pulmonis. Young rats were apparently more resistant to infection and developed lesions after long incubation. M. pulmonis was reisolated from pneumonic lungs, trachea, and tympanic cavity of exposed rats. The gross and microscopic lesions observed were same as described by previous workers.
