Focal bacterial hepatitis in foals: preliminary report

The clinical course of the disease which caused mortality in young foals was short without any signs of ill health, apart from icterus in some cases. PM examination revealed gross lesions in the liver, and hepatic lymph nodes. Histological examination showed degenerative inflammatory changes in the liver with gram-negative, filamentous and beaded bacteria in hepatocytes at the periphery of the lesions. Although the bacterium was not isolated, it appeared to have similar morphological characteristics to Bacillus piliformis.
