Breathing difficulty can be the first symptom of many diseases. Frequent causes of dyspnoea in patients under out-patient care are of pulmonary and cardiovascular origin. Deconditioning is often a contributing factor in patients with chronic lung or heart disease. Key elements in the evaluation of patients with chronic and acute dyspnoea will be reviewed in this article.
