Latent hypertension refers to a condition in which the blood pressure of a patient who is not using antihypertensive medication is normal during a medical consultation but high at home or upon ambulatory blood pressure monitoring. It occurs in approx. 10% of the population. To recognize the phenomenon, the European Society of Hypertension recommends blood pressure measurement outside of a medical office for a patient who has a satisfactory blood pressure on consultation, blood-pressure related target-organ damage or high total risk of cardiovascular disease. These patients should receive lifestyle counseling and be considered for antihypertensive drug treatment.
