Q fever was confirmed on six farms in the Ruse region of Bulgaria 35% of 685 sheep, 51% of 201 goats and 17% of 166 cattle were serologically positive. Four strains of Coxiella burnetii were obtained from ewes and goats that had aborted. There was evidence that human beings had become infected by sheep, and that wild animals (hares and sousliks) were reservoirs of infection.
