Sensitivity towards henna (active principle 3-hydroxynaphthoquinone) was shown to be strong in Trichophyton rubrum, T. mentagrophytes, T. tonsurans, T. violaceum, T. verrucosum, T. schoenleinii, Epidermophyton floccosum, Microsporum ferrugineum, M. gypseum, M. canis and Sporotrichum [Sporothrix] schenckii and weak in Candida albicans, Geotrichum candidum, Cryptococcus neoformans, Cladosporium werneckii and Phialophora dermatitidis, inhibition zones of varying extent forming on an agar medium. It is suggested that henna may originally have been used as an antimycotic and have later acquired cosmetic importance.
