In order to switch the focus from a patients treatment to the care of the patient, it is important to understand and fully consider the full impact on the patient of both the heart disease itself and the various treatment options available. The literature includes many studies of treatment options but little to inform us of the care necessary to support the adult patient who must undergo venovenous ultrafiltration on ICU. Although still requiring investigation, reviews of the literature suggest that a care-oriented approach aiming to reduce both acute and chronic stress through involvement of the patients social contacts, exerts a protective effect and improves the patient's outcome. Suggestions for future research are included.
