The criteria for a characterization of diseases of the haematopoietic tissues are reviewed, with particular reference to recent findings on the cytogenesis of certain cells. These findings necessitate a revised classification of leucoses and reticuloses. Most of the tissue macrophages are represented by emigrating blood monocytes which derive from promyelocytes and belong (along with the granulocytes) to the myeloid leucocytes. The assertion of a separate histiocyte can no longer be maintained, while the reticulum cell needs to be restricted. The postulated undifferentiated reticulum cell has frequently resulted in an unjustified classification of the disease as 'reticulosis'. The classification of the lymphatic cells has become more difficult since the phenomena of evolutionary ability, antigen-induced formation of immunoblasts and virus-induced transformation have become known. The tissue mast cell can be ranged nosologically with the monocyte series, thus supposing an exclusively myeloid origin.
