Fascioliasis causing jaundice and intestinal bleeding

Urgent laparotomy performed on a 12-year-old girl, recently arrived in Australia from Tanzania, enabled a diagnosis of Fasciola hepatica infection to be made. The case had presented as jaundice and massive intestinal bleeding, both attributable to haemobilia which has not previously been associated with fascioliasis. Treatment with dehydroemetine was successful. The clinical and pathological processes are summarized and the case is described in detail and the histopathological changes are illustrated.
