Following a TIA, patients are at a greater risk of vascular complications such as stroke or myocardial infarction. These often occur at an early stage. The ABCD2 score can be used to make a distinction between high-risk and low-risk patients. Prevention of vascular events requires rapid treatment with platelet inhibitors and timely surgical intervention for high-grade symptomatic carotid stenosis, if present. Patients with recurrent stroke need prompt thrombolysis. This can best be done by admitting patients to hospital and placing them under 24-hour observation.
