Current thoughts about the mechanism of drug addiction and the possibility of development of new drugs in its treatment

Scientist's all over the world are now busy in finding out the mysteries of drug addiction. With the help of the molecular biology and powerful imaging techniques such as positron imaging tomography (PET) scanner the researchers have well understood the neurochemical aspects of abusive substances and they have begun to design highly targeted drugs that may soon by used to treat addiction on a chemical and even on a genetic level. Moreover, they have found that some of the drugs that are used in the treatment of mental disorders like schizophrenia, depression and anxiety are also helpful in treating addiction. From this finding it has been thought that diseases of brain cells or alteration of functions of brain cells due to drug, alcohol and probably tobacco use and with mental illness, may involve similar brain processes.
