Studies were made on the strain of T. parva causing East Coast fever ('Amakebe') in the main cattle producing area of Uganda. This strain, though producing similar clinical symptoms to those reported from Kenya and South Africa, differed in the following ways: it was equally well transmitted by blood and by ticks, and anaemia and jaundice occurred more frequently. Animals which had recovered from T. parva (Muguga) and T. mutans infections were not protected from fatal infection by the Ugandan strain. The possibility of the Ugandan parasite being a distinct species from the Kenyan strain is discussed.
