Threats to life caused by the exacerbation of COPD has been well documented clinically. For this reason, acute respiratory failure in patients with COPD requires intensive procedure using the available techniques of ventilation. Classical mechanical ventilation requires a patient intubation. In the case of non-invasive ventilation is sufficient to establish appropriate interfaces to ensure connectivity with the respiratory tract and gas suppliance. Facial masks and helmets are used for many years. Conducted comparative analysis indicates the undoubted usefulness of helmets and non-invasive ventilation in patients with exacerbation of COPD, although some aspects require further assessment. It is also considered the introduction of non-invasive ventilation and helmets at home.
