A survey was conducted in Togo in March-April 1995 by the Demographic Research Unit of the University of Benin, Lome, as an extension of a fertility survey conducted in 1976. The 1976 survey showed a high demand for children, with fertility rates of nearly 6.5 per woman. The present survey was undertaken to assess the effects of the economic crisis suffered in Togo since the 1980s on fertility and women's status. Survey questions related to land access, women's income from agriculture and trade, matrimonial status, and family solidarity. Survey results should indicate whether a "crisis demographic transition" has taken place due to economic factors. Information on survey results can be obtained by writing to the Demographic Research Unit of the University of Benin, Lome, P. O. Box 12971, Lome, Togo.
