The effect of an anabolic steroid on postoperative nitrogen balance

A single injection of 50 or 100 mg nandralone decanoate on the day after operation significantly improved N balance in men after truncal vagotomy and pyloroplasty for duodenal ulceration. The effect was evident in both the catabolic and anabolic phases of the response to trauma. The improvement was better in those also given casein hydrolysate, sorbitol and fat emulsion parenterally for the first 3 days after operation than in those given an isotonic solution of glucose and saline.
