Diagnosis of sexually transmitted diseases in pediatrics

Sexually transmitted diseases(STD) among children includes the following three infections; vertical transmissions from infected mothers to newborns and infants, infections among adolescents, and infections in victims of sexual abuse. Detection of STD organisms from children suggests presence of sexual abuse. Diagnostic procedure of STD among children needs to be less invasive. Antigen detection tests and PCR methods for some STD organisms may show false positive results. Normal flora of genital organs of children should also be noticed for diagnosis of STD. Vertical infections of STD organisms cause a variety of symptoms to infected children. Diagnosis of infections in children using commercially available reagents should be cautious. Flora of respiratory tracts and transplacental antibody may affect the results.
