Trace characterization of physiologically active substances with a low molecular weight that are classified immunochemically as haptens (e.g., steroids, prostaglandins, catecholamines and synthetic drugs) is an important subject in biomedical analysis. Immunoassays are now widely used for this purpose because of high specificity and sensitivity. Although various technical bases required to establish practical assay systems have already been developed, intensive studies are ongoing to improve assay performance or enlarge the applicable field. This review summarizes the current status and future prospect of "hapten immunoassays".
