Arthralgia in childhood

The differential diagnosis of arthralgia in childhood ranges from growing pains through rheumatic diseases, infections, orthopedic and hemostasiological disorders to oncological diseases. The situation can be clarified by obtaining a specific history and performing a physical examination, during which particular attention is paid to atypical movement patterns, differences in leg length and circumference and the positioning of hip and anklejoints, and by obtaining ultrasonographic data and x-ray films. Depending on the diagnosis, pain is treated by orthopedic, anti-inflammatory or antibiotic means, where necessary supported by physical measures/physiotherapy.
