Emerging infections and global blood safety

A discussion on the threat of emerging infections in the context of blood transfusion-transmissible diseases is presented. Human behaviours potentially involved with the emergence of selected infectious agents are mentioned briefly. The elements of good preventive and control programmes are described. Diseases mentioned are HIV, HBV, HCV, malaria, babesiosis, Chagas' disease, leishmaniasis, West Nile fever, HHV-8, SARS and variant Creutzfeldt Jakob disease. Other infectious agents that have a role on bioterrorism are also mentioned.
