An oxygen therapy mask for cattle was adapted from the 'Ventimask' for human use. An oxygen flow of 12 litres per minute to the mask provides the same oxygen concentration (28%) as when the Ventimask is used on man. With this oxygen flow, respiratory dead space added by the mask is almost eliminated. Preliminary clinical trials have shown that, provided the flow is not less than 12 litres/minute, the mask is of benefit in relieving a respiratory distress syndrome seen at a large indoor show, although this particular benefit may be due merely to the cooling effect of the gas flow.
