Based on findings of typical villous atrophy and/or positive immunofluorescence, diagnosis of TGE was made in 32 of 93 clinically ill pigs. Colibacillosis was diagnosed in the majority of the remaining pigs. Comparison of fluorescent antibody (FA) results with histopathological findings indicated an overall correlation of 92%. Unfixed slides prepared from intestinal scrapings could be maintained at room temperature (25 deg C) for at least four days before staining without any noticeable loss of fluorescence.
