The authors review the immunopathology of invasive pneumococcal infections in patients with primary immunodeficiency diseases, with particular emphasis on selective anti-polysaccharide antibody deficiency. They summarize current knowledge on the molecular mechanisms and clinical manifestations of host defense against Str. pneumoniae.
